The purpose of the Practical Nursing program at Carl Sandburg College is to prepare practical nurses to function under the direction of a licensed professional in an ever-changing health care environment in a variety of health care settings. The program includes five nursing courses and specified science and general studies courses. Upon successful completion of the PN program, the graduate will receive a certificate from the College and is eligible to apply to write the National Counsel Licensing Examination. Upon successful completion of this exam, the student is eligible to apply for Practical Nursing licensure in Illinois. The curriculum prepares the graduate to provide nursing care to individuals with common health problems at each stage of the life span. The student is prepared to function within the nursing roles of provider of care, manager of care, and member within the discipline of nursing in structured health care settings. Completion of the program provides the knowledge base for education and career mobility in nursing. Clinical experience for the nursing courses is provided at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, and Community Medical Center in Monmouth. Extended care facilities and other community-based health care agencies in the Galesburg area are also utilized. The Practical Nursing program is also offered at The Branch Campus in Carthage with clinical sites at area health care facilities. Advanced standing may be granted to the Certified Nurse Assistant. This program parallels the first year of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program, allowing for career mobility. For more information, see the ADN program section of this catalog.
