Scrubs Academy - Galesburg

Know a future nurse or doctor? The Scrubs Academy hosted by Carl Sandburg College's Corporate & Leisure College is the perfect opportunity for them to explore the field of health care.

The Scrubs Academy is a summer enrichment program for students 11-15 years old. The program is designed to give students an opportunity to experience health care careers through simulated activities, hospital tours and guest speakers. The academy meets from 9 a.m.-noon July 17-19. The cost is $40 with a registration deadline of July 3. Each registered student receives a t-shirt.

Sandburg has partnered with Galesburg Cottage Hospital and OSF HealthCare to offer Scrubs Academy. *Presentations will vary some from the 2018 Scrubs Academy.

Nature Expedition - Galesburg

Young explorers will not want to miss the Nature Expedition hosted by Carl Sandburg College and the University of Illinois Extension.

The Nature Expedition is a summer enrichment program for 9 to 13 year olds that will give them a chance to explore and learn about the outdoors through related activities. The program meets from 9 a.m. - noon July 10-12 at Carl Sandburg College’s Main Campus in Galesburg. The cost is $20 to register with a registration deadline of July 8.

Join 4-H instructor, Mike Moody, as he shares his vast knowledge of nature and wildlife. He will encourage student participation in natural resources management, teach concepts that will lead to sound decision making on orienting a map with GPS navigation, and include fun facts about animals. 

Wendy Ferguson, master gardener program coordinator, with the University of Illinois Extension will present how to use all of your senses to explore the natural world. Students will learn about “deer ears” and “owl eyes” as a way of observing our environment and learn how to start a nature journal combining words, sketches, and scientific data to build a record of their encounters with their “nature neighbors.” All participants will create a nature journal to keep.

Sports Camps - Galesburg

Sports Camps - Galesburg

Young athletes can get firsthand instruction from Carl Sandburg College coaches and players this spring and summer at sports camps for cross country, basketball, volleyball, softball, and soccer.

Campers will learn the fundamentals of their sport(s), with an emphasis on having fun. Each camp will be led by Chargers coaches, who have decades of experience at the collegiate level, and current Sandburg athletes will assist with individual instruction at some camps.

Details for each sport’s camp are as follows:

Cross Country

Practice proper warm-up, stretching, pacing, breathing, striding, arm carriage and cool-down. Camp takes place 5-6 p.m. June 3-6 on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg. Open to ages 5 to 12 years old. Led by Chargers coach Rodney Blue. Early camp registration cost is $35 and includes a T-shirt. Early registration deadline is noon May 20. Students may continue to register after the deadline date for $35; however, no T-shirt will be provided. Rain location is John M. Lewis Gymnasium on Sandburg’s Main Campus.

 

Basketball

Practice fundamentals and focus on teamwork. One-on-one through 5-on-5 concepts will be discussed and taught. Camp takes place 9 a.m. – noon June 17-20 at Sandburg’s John M. Lewis Gymnasium. Open to ages 9 to 15 years old. Led by Chargers women’s basketball coach Mike Bailey. Early camp registration cost is $50 and includes a T-shirt. Early registration deadline is noon June 3. Students may continue to register after the deadline date for $50; however, no T-shirt will be provided.

 

Volleyball

Practice passing, setting and hitting, with a focus on offensive and defensive strategies. Camp takes place June 24-27 at Sandburg’s John M. Lewis Gymnasium. Open to ages 10 to 17 years old. Students will be placed by age groups. Camp times are 9– 11:30 a.m. Led by Chargers coach Todd Winkler. Early camp registration cost is $45 and includes a T-shirt. Early registration deadline is noon June 10. Students may continue to register after the deadline date is noon for $45; however, no T-shirt will be provided.  

 

Softball

Practice hitting, pitching and fielding while also focusing on offensive and defensive strategies. Camp takes place July 22-25 at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg. Open to ages 10 to 17 years old. Students will be divided into separate age groups. Camp times are 10 a.m. to noon. Led by Chargers coach Todd Winkler. Early camp registration cost is $40 and includes a T-shirt. Early registration deadline is noon July 8. Students may continue to register after the deadline date for $40; however, no T-shirt will be provided. Rain location is John M. Lewis Gymnasium on Sandburg’s Main Campus.

 

Soccer

Practice juggling, receiving, passing and playing variable games. Camp also includes a focus on proper warm-ups. Takes place August 3-4 at the Knox County YMCA soccer complex. Open for students ages 5-17. Times are 9-11 a.m. for students 5-11 years old and noon - 2 p.m. for students 12-17 years of age. Led by Chargers men’s soccer coach Kevwe Akpore. Early camp registration cost is $35 and includes a T-shirt. Early registration deadline is noon July 22. Students may continue to register after the deadline date for $35; however, no T-shirt will be provided. Rain location is John M. Lewis Gymnasium on Sandburg’s Main Campus.

 *In order to participate, students must be the required age by the sports camp start date.

Coding Camp - Galesburg

Youth Coding Camp Offered This Summer at Carl Sandburg

GALESBURG — Calling all coders! Amazon Future Engineer and Coding with Kids have teamed up to bring coding instruction to students nationwide. Carl Sandburg College’s Corporate & Leisure College is hosting one of the coding camps this summer for students interested in learning about coding or enhancing their coding skills.

Students will learn about one of the most widely used programming languages in the world. Python is a very versatile and easy-to-learn starter language that is widely used by software developers, scientists and data analysis, from medical research to applications at NASA. Through the games they create, campers will learn and practice core-coding concepts and learn Python-specific concepts and syntax. Projects range from trivia quizzes to competitive two-player games and everything in between. Campers will gain valuable experience with key concepts such as data structures and algorithms. Prior coding experience is helpful, but not required.

The camp runs July 22-26, for students 10-13 years old, and meets from 9:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg. The instructor will be present via Skype technology. Amazon Future Engineer scholarships are available on a first-come, first-serve basis to any student. There is no registration fee, however, space is limited to 16 students.

Manufacturing Camp - Galesburg

Manufacturing Camp is for students ages 10-14 and takes place July 29 - August 1 at Sandburg’s Center for Manufacturing Excellence, 2051 Tom L. Wilson Blvd., on the Main Campus in Galesburg. The camp will run from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Thursday.

Participants will learn about various types of manufacturing through hands-on activities, company tours, guest speakers and more. Family members may attend a certificate of completion ceremony on the final day of the camp.

A limited number of full scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis thanks to the generous support of camp sponsors. The scholarship covers tuition fees, lunches, snacks and a T-shirt.

Camp participants are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Registration also includes a $25 deposit that will be refunded after the participant completes all four days of the camp. The early registration deadline is noon July 8.
