 CSC Announces New Soccer Program

Carl Sandburg College announced on Monday, Feb. 25, that it is beginning a soccer program. Jim Carothers is the head coach for the men's and women's teams and Jaime Godina is the assistant coach. The teams, which will compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I level, will begin play fall 2008.
The first scheduled event for the women's team is a friendly scrimmage against Joliet Junior College on Aug. 18, 2008.
The first scheduled event for the men's team is a friendly scrimmage against Waubonsee Community College on Aug. 20.
"Carl Sandburg College felt like this was a good time to add the two soccer teams for the simple reason that CSC continues to try and meet the  needs of our district," says Mike Bailey, assistant athletic director. "Youth soccer is very popular in our area and high schools are adding soccer or looking at the possibility to meet the needs of their students. It is our role as the area community college to provide a variety of academic and athletic opportunities to serve our students."

"I'm excited about the program," says Carothers, who has coached soccer for 20 years. "It will be a great experience to start a program on this level. There is overwhelming participation at the lower level; we will be successful because of the numbers at the lower levels. It's great opening this up."
"It is a great opportunity to coach under Coach Carothers," says Godina. Godina has been coaching soccer for seven years, serving as assistant coach at Monmouth College and at Monmouth-Roseville High School and coaching at the Monmouth YMCA.

Two CSC Athletes named Academic All-Americans

Carl Sandburg College would like to announce that two athletes have been named National Junior College Academic All-Americans and one of the athletic programs earned recognition as well.

The NJCAA recognizes individuals that carry a 3.8 overall grade point and above as Distinguished All Americans and Christina O'Neill a So. from Macomb, IL achieved this academic standard. O'Neill was a post player on two CSC Women's Basketball squads that played in the national tournament. Christina is continuing her education at Western Illinois University in the fall.

Earning Academic All-American for carrying a GPA of 3.6 overall or better is Tyler Dykeman a So. from Victoria, IL. Dykeman was a member of CSC's Men's Golf program and will also continue his education at Western Illinois in the fall.

The Men's Golf program, under Head Coach Dean Betts, achieved a team academic honor after the squad posted a cumulative GPA of 3.32 which ranked the team 4th in the country in overall team GPA for Men's Golf programs.

CSC is very proud of these individuals and team members for their hard work in the classroom and wish them all the best as they continue in their academic area of choice.

Carl Sandburg College
PHILOSOPHY CONCERNING ATHLETICS
The mission of Carl Sandburg College is comprehensive in scope and the College is committed to the development of each individual to his/her fullest potential. To that end, the College recognizes the many positive benefits a student earns by participating in athletics, including the following:

  • Cooperation and camaraderie — teamwork
  • Self-discipline and the benefits of hard work on a continuous basis
  • Dealing with adversity or success in a healthy manner
  • Collective goal setting
  • Developing positive attitudes and enhancing self-esteem without sacrificing humility

A participant in an athletic program at CSC is, by definition, a student — a person whose objective is to develop intellectual skills to the maximum extent, a person who will use the educational experience at CSC as a foundation for his/her life-long vocation. It is, therefore, expected that a CSC athlete will make a total personal commitment to academic achievement and will aggressively pursue excellence in the classroom with the same energy and dedication as that demonstrated in the arena of competitive athletics.
Pride is the essence of this program. The College faculty and staff, the community, and the families of the athletes rightfully demand and expect behavior and attitudes from the athletic teams that reflect high quality values — we want to be able to tell an athlete that, "We are proud that you represent Carl Sandburg College."
Conversely, it is very important that you, the athlete, feel and project pride in wearing the uniform of the Chargers. The College, therefore, has the duty to provide an environment — both academically and physically — which enhances the growth of your human potential to the fullest.
We want you to say, "I'm proud to be a Charger and I am pleased to be attending Carl Sandburg College."
