Chargers Host Region IV Tournament

The Carl Sandburg College baseball team finished up the regular season on Tuesday by sweeping Sauk Valley in a double-header.  The scores were 6-4 and 11-1.  The Chargers finished the regular season with a 26-14 overall record, and a 17-3 record in the Arrowhead Conference.
Carl Sandburg received the number 1 overall seed for the Region IV tournament.  That is a great accomplishment for the Chargers, and puts them in a great position to have a chance to win their first Region title in the school's history. The first game between Carl Sandburg and Prairie State will be played at 1:00 on Saturday.  That will be the only game played on Saturday.  Game 2 will be at 10:00 am on Sunday and game 3 will be at 1:00 Sunday if neccessary.  All games will be played on the campus of Carl Sandburg College
"Receiving the number 1 overall seed in the region is a great accomplishment for our ball club.  Winning the conference title by a huge margin and getting the number 1 seed is a huge step for our program.  It is nice for our guys to be rewarded for all their hard work and dedication.  We are not done though.  It has been a season to remember and we are not going to let it end early.  The guys will be ready to play this weekend and move on to the Region final the next weekend at BlackHawk College in Moline.  We are going to take it one game at a time now because anything can happen in the tournament, but we have one ultimate goal in mind now.  That is to take a trip to Millington, Tennessee to compete in the National Tournament.  We are hungry and ready to go.  I know one thing for sure:  we are going to let it all hang out every time that we step onto the field, and that is really all you can ask for"  T.J. Lindburg

Chargers Arrowhead Conference
Baseball Champions 2008

Carl Sandburg College (21-13, 15-3) baseball team swept Black Hawk College Tuesday afternoon at The Bill Hungate Complex on the campus of CSC by the scores of 5-4 and 5-0.  The sweep gives the Chargers their first Arrowhead Conference baseball championship since the 1989 season.   CSC will finish the conference portion of the schedule Saturday at Sauk Valley with the title clinched.
In game one Brandon Oelman secured the win for CSC going 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 8 hits.  Kyle Krisher came in to strike out all three batters he faced after Oelman gave up two runs on a single and a home run to start the inning in the seventh for Black Hawk to earn his fifth save in the last week.  Leading the offensive push for the Chargers was Jeff Gauley who was 2-4 with 1 RBI, Grant Grimmett- 1-3 with an RBI double, Bryant Fernetti who was 2-3 with an RBI double, and Shane Gaumer with a 2-3 day and an RBI.
Game two was all CSC.  Jacob Genz went the distance throwing shutout baseball for seven innings scattering five hits.  Offensively in the clinching game the Chargers were led by Brandon Oelman who was 2-3 including an RBI double, Derrick Clark was 1-3 and an RBI, Ryan Kohl was 1-3, and Ben Ascher was 1-3.  Sandburg only managed 5 hits but scored 5 runs on a squeeze play executed by Brandon Porter and Black Hawk miscues.  CSC scored one run on a balk call and manufactured some runs off walks and errors by the visitors.
CSC Coach TJ Lindburg-"I'm very excited and proud of the players.  It's been a long year for the guys.  They have worked hard since the start of school to get to this point and now they can call themselves champions.  There has been some pressure put on them by the buzz around campus and I think they feel relieved to get past this milestone and now we are ready to move on to our next goals.   The next step is to compete at the Region IV level and our goal is to win the thing.  We hope that this makes all the former players that have worn our uniform feel proud of what this team has accomplished for their school
