CSC Men's Basketball Defeat Fighting Bees 11/7/2008
Galesburg—Carl Sandburg College's men's basketball team (2-0) played the St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees JV team (0-2) on Thursday night winning 98-77.
CSC was able to lock down on defense and only allowed St. Ambrose to hold a lead over them for a short period of time. The Fighting Bees went ahead 20-19 with nine minutes remaining in the first half and lead for roughly four minutes. The Chargers stole the lead back with five minutes and twenty seconds remaining in the half on a basket by sophomore Rob Clark. As the first half buzzer sounded, freshman Patrick Lewis hit a three to give CSC a 50-38 lead as they went into the locker room. The second half belonged to the Chargers as they were able to carry that momentum to finish the game.
"The first five minutes of the game, we came out a little sluggish then coach put the second five in and they gave us a little spark," said CSC sophomore Kuddles Hopkins. "I think in the second half we started to get a little fatigued. The first five minutes of the second half, we did not come out as hard as we should, but we got the win."
CSC was led by Hopkins who had 23 points, Rob Clark added 11 points, and Graylin Smith had 15 points off the bench.
CSC men's basketball head coach Ryan Twaddle was able to get all 13 Chargers into the game.
"They all have been working hard in practice," Twaddle said. "I will take a win any day of the week, but we gave up too many points on the scoreboard and didn't get after it on defense like we should have. Our help side defense positioning was a little off. They were getting too many runs at the basket, and we weren't jumping to the ball."
The Chargers play next on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Vincennes, Ind. to take on the Vincennes University Trailblazers.
