 CSC Announces New Soccer Program

Carl Sandburg College announced on Monday, Feb. 25, that it is beginningsoccer.coachesforweb
a soccer program. Jim Carothers is the head coach for the men's and women's
teams and Jaime Godina is the assistant coach. The teams, which will compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I level, will begin play fall 2008.
The first scheduled event for the women's team is a friendly scrimmage against Joliet Junior College on Aug. 18, 2008.
The first scheduled event for the men's team is a friendly scrimmage against Waubonsee Community College on Aug. 20.
"Carl Sandburg College felt like this was a good time to add the two soccer teams for the simple reason that CSC continues to try and meet the  needs of our district," says Mike Bailey, assistant athletic director. "Youth soccer is very popular in our area and high schools are adding soccer or looking at the possibility to meet the needs of their students. It is our role as the area community college to provide a variety of academic and athletic opportunities to serve our students." "I'm excited about the program," says Carothers, who has coached soccer for 20 years. "It will be a great experience to start a program on this level. There is overwhelming participation at the lower level; we will be successful because of the numbers at the lower levels. It's great opening this up."
"It is a great opportunity to coach under Coach Carothers," says Godina. Godina has been coaching soccer for seven years, serving as assistant coach at Monmouth College and at Monmouth-Roseville High School and coaching at the Monmouth YMCA.
