Brown named to 1st Team Region IV

Carl Sandburg College is proud to announce that Courtney Brown, a 5'8 Fr. from Avon, IL, has been unanimously selected to both the Region IV Volleyball 1st Team and the Arrowhead Conference Volleyball 1st Team.  Brown, who did most of her damage as an outside hitter, put up some outstanding all around stats to earn her spot on these teams.
She had a hitting efficiency percentage of 36.5%
She had 565 kills or 4.0 per game that put her 19th in the nation in this category!!
She averaged 2.1 digs a game
She averaged .86 blocks per game
She had 34 serving aces on the year

Coach Winkler; tonight we had a few players sick but that's no excuse why we lost. We were up big in the 1st game and did not put Clinton away and let them back in game 1. When we lost the 1st game we fell apart and could not get the momentum back we just could get the job done.

The Chargers next game is Wednesday at Clinton College in a non-conference match up.
Coach Winkler; tonight the ladies played sound volleyball did the assignments we asked them to do and never got down on themselves and playing hard all the time.

Coach Winkler; tonight we knew what we had to do to be successful and we did not step up. We had too many unforced errors, missed serves, net errors and mental mistakes. Tonight we beat ourselves we didn't show up to play and gave the games away at the end.

Galesburg, IL  10/16/07
The Carl Sandburg College Chargers Volleyball Team played an Arrowhead Conference match tonight defeating Highland
College in 5 games 20-30; 30-27; 30-21; 29-31; 16-14. The Chargers were tied with Highland for 2nd place in the Arrowhead Conference, so the win tonight sets up the last Arrowhead Conference match tomorrow night when the Chargers take on Sauk Valley College. If the Chargers can win tomorrow night they will finish alone in second place in the Arrowhead Conference. In game 1 the Chargers fell behind early and could not get in the flow of the game and trailed the entire way.
Game 2 the Chargers were flat falling behind by 6 points early, then the Chargers fought back point by point to take the lead 24-23 and held on to win. In game 3 Carl Sandburg stepped it up took the lead at the start of the game and never looked back.
Game 4 Carl Sandburg came out took the lead held the lead until 25 -25 when Highland started to fine holds in Sandburg's
 Blocks and went on to win game 4 29-31. In game 5 Carl Sandburg started out slow down 3 -0 before Courtnee Brown
found the floor with a kill. Then Bianca Price served 4 in a row and Sandburg took the lead 4 -3, after a side out by Highland
Carl Sandburg had trouble putting the ball down and trailed 4-5. Sandburg Courtnee Brown step-up with a kill for the side out and Nikki Thomas severed 1 to tie the game at 5-5.  Sandburg Courtnee Brown went back to the end line to serve with score tied 6-6 Brown served 4 in a row and Sandburg was up 10-6 and Highland then took a time out. After the time out
Highland fought back to take the lead at 13-12 then Carl Sandburg called a time out. Highland then scored to make the score 14-12 Carl Sandburg then got a kill by Linley Hedbloom with the score 14 -13 Megan Juergens went back and served the final 3 points and Sandburg won 16-14.

The Carl Sandburg College Volleyball Team played in the Harper College invite finishing in 2nd place. Sandburg went 2-2 in pool play beating South Suburban College 30-27; 30-27 and Black Hawk East College 30-24; 30-16, losing to Moraine Valley College 14-30; 30-23; 7-15 and Harper College 32-34;30-27;14-16. In the Semi Finals the defeated Harper College 30-26; 30-25 the losing to Moraine Valley College 20-30; 30-32 in the Championship Match. On the day Courtnee Brown 13 digs 9 blocks 54 kills 6 aces, Jessica Redington 13 blocks 13 digs 35 kills 6 aces and Megan Juergens 17 digs and 20 kills.

Malta, IL 10/10/07
The Carl Sandburg College Volleyball team played an Arrowhead Conference match with Kishwaukee College the #1 ranked team in division II NJCAA tonight losing in 3 games 7-30; 14-30; 10-30.

Coach Winkler; tonight we play a great team in Kishwaukee but we didn't play to our capability and we needed to play our A game and we didn't, we never got into the flow of the match.

Moline, IL 10/9/07
The Carl Sandburg College Chargers Volleyball Team played an Arrowhead Conference match with Black Hawk College tonight; the Chargers defeated Black Hawk in 3 games 33-31; 30-20; 30-25. The win moved the Chargers into a tie for 2nd place in the Arrowhead Conference at 5-4.

Coach Winkler: tonight we reworked the lineup to get more production out of the front row, the ladies responded well
and played one of their best matches of the year. It helped that they knew if we won that we would move into a tie for second place in the conference.

Currently Linley Hedbloom is 12th in the nation in division II NJCAA in blocks per game with 1.600 and Courtnee Brown is currently 18th in hitting efficiency with 40.110% and 15th in kills per game with 4.046 in the nation in division II NJCAA.
Coach Winkler; tonight we played as a team worked together and showed what we can do if we play as a team.

Coach Winkler: We played well tonight but we had break downs at key times that killed us. Elgin was a very good team
we just need play every point and we didn't do that.

The Carl Sandburg College Chargers played Black Hawk East tonight in an Arrowhead Conference match up the Chargers won in 5 games 25-30; 32-30; 30-26; 27-30; 15-9. Leaders for the Chargers were Bethany Price 8 digs 4 kills 50 assists 1 ace, Megan Juergens 32 digs, Linley Hedbloom 11 blocks 12 kills and Courtnee Brown 1 block 12 digs 30 kills which is a season high.
Coach Winkler: tonight we came out flat in game 1 had trouble passing and couldn't find the open spot for a kill. Game 2 started out flat again we were down 12-25 and finally  came together and won on a 19 to 5 run great 2^nd half of a game.Game 3 played well did the things we needed to do to win. Game 4 had a little break down at the end to let that one slip away. Game 5 started slow but pick it up and finished strong.

Coach Winkler: Tonight we played Sauk Valley who is currently in 2^nd place in the Arrowhead Conference and I told the team we had to step it up and play our game and the responded to the task. Tonight we had many people step up in key situations and that made difference

Burlington, IA 9/19/07
Tonight the Carl Sandburg College Chargers Volleyball team play a non-conference match with Southeastern College losing in 3 games 30-32; 27-30; 28-30. The Chargers got off to a slow start in game 1 falling behind 3-12 early in the game but then stepped it up to 30-30 before losing 30-32. Game 2 the Chargers lead the game all the way until 26-26 making a few timely errors. Game 3 the chargers jumped out to a 15-7 lead only to let Southeastern back in to it at 27-27 then losing 28-30. The Carl Sandburg Chargers Volleyball Team played Waubonsee College today at Sugar Grove Illinois winning in 4 games 30-15; 35-37; 30-22; 30-25.Bethany Price 4 blocks 14 digs 3 kills 51 assists, Ashley Colwell 2 blocks 19 digs 4 kills 1 ace, Megan Juergens 16 digs 1 assists, Linley Hedbloom 6 blocks 2 digs 5 kills, Jessica Redington 6 blocks 6 digs 11 kills 1 ace, Courtnee Brown 4 blocks 11 digs 27kills.
Coach Winkler; we made a few adjustments today which helped us play better today. We were focused today and played 3 games really well but in the second game we relaxed too much and dug ourselves in a hole then fought back and just couldn't score to win the game. Today we had 3 people step their games up which made the difference Megan Juergens passes were great; Jessica Redington had some big kills today and played her best game of the year. Courtnee Brown stepped up her game with 27 kills which is 11 kills above her average for the year.

Coach Winklers: tonight we started out playing very well in game 1, went to game 2 got the lead and then started playing tight and St. Ambrose took advantage of our bad passing. Game 3 we came out played hard got the lead and shut down when we were up 25-20. Game 4 we were controlling the game until Courtnee Brown got hurt and we had a hard time adjusting to her being on the bench. Tonight we played better tonight but we are still not playing every point and losing focus at key points in the game and thats is why we are losing.

Carl Sandburg College Chargers Volleyball team played an Arrowhead Conference match with Illinois Valley tonight at Oglesby the Chargers won the match in 5 games 22-30; 24-30; 30-21; 30-27; 15-2. Leading the Chargers tonight were Bethany Price with 36 assists 9 digs 3 kills and 1 ace, Linley Hedbloom 11 blocks 3 kills, Jessica Redington 6 blocks 4 digs 9 kills and 5 aces, Ashley Colwell 10 digs 7 kills and Courtnee Brown 5 blocks 8 digs 19 kills. Carl Sandburg is now 1-1 in Arrowhead Conference play and will play Black Hawk College Wednesday night in an Arrowhead Conference match

Monmouth, IL 9/10/07
The Carl Sandburg College Chargers play a non-conference volleyball match at John Lewis gym tonight against Monmouth College JV the Chargers lost in three games 22-30; 25-30; 20-30. The leaders for the Chargers, Courtney Brown had 10 kill Linley Hedbloom had 4 kills and 5 blocks Jessica Redington had 7 kills and 2 blocks. Ashley Colwell had 22 digs and 1 ace.

Lincoln, IL 9/04/07
Sandburg lost in their first Arrowhead Conference game against Blackhawk East. They took East four games 21-30, 30-28, 25-30, 26-30. The Chargers were led by Courtnee Brown with 15 kills. Jessica Redington led the Chargers with seven blocks, Linley Hedbloom followed with 4. Bethany Price led Sandburg with 41 assists, and Megan Jurgens led the Chargers with 16 digs. Carl Sandburg is holding a high school volleyball tournament Friday September 7 through Saturday September 8. The Chargers next match is a non-conference game against Monmouth College September 10 at John Lewis gymnasium. Coach's Comments: We played well but we didn't elevate our game to the level to bring home the win. We suffered an injury to one of our starters the beginning of the second game which made us have to change up the rotation. So we had to put some players in places they weren't use to playing and they did step up.

Lincoln, IL 8/29/07
Carl Sandburg Volleyball Team played Lincoln College tonight at Lincoln Illinois. Carl Sandburg College lost the match In three games 14-30, 26-30 and 22-30.Bethany Price had 4 kills and 16 assists Megan Juergens had 10 digs and Courtnee Brown had 15 digs 15 kills and 1 ace. Coaches Comments, in the first game we just couldn't get started got down early and tried to fight back but it was too little to late. Second game we played really well the ball just didn't fall our way most of the time. We our young and it is showing right now we need to step it up and find out what we are capable of doing.
Carl Sandburg College is now 2-3 on the season there next game is September 4 at 6:00 PM with Black Hawk East In there Arrowhead Conference opener.
