GED (General Education Development) classes are for adults who have not completed high school. Students prepare to take the GED exam to earn a High School Equivalency Certificate. Each spring graduates are invited to participate in a GED graduation ceremony at Carl Sandburg College. Pre-GED classes provide instruction to adults in basic reading, math, and writing as well as skills needed in everyday life. Adults who need basic literacy skills enroll in Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes. Students progress at an individual pace. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are for students whose native language is not English. Students from all over the world learn spoken and written English skills as well as practical life skills. Citizenship instruction is also available. Transition for Success is a six-week class that prepares students to enter the workforce. Students who successfully complete the class may be eligible for additional training for the job market. Correspondence courses are for enrolled high school students who lack a minimal number of credits for graduation. Students can enroll in basic math, English composition and American history. Literacy Tutoring is available through the Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition. Trained literacy volunteers work with adult students who need to improve their basic reading, writing or math skills. Tutors and students work either one-on-one or in a small group. Volunteer tutors participate in a training program before they are placed with students. Continual support is available for both tutors and students through support groups, special events, book clubs and workshops. Family Literacy activities provide special activities for parents and children to do together to improve literacy. Families have worked together with computers, science projects, storytelling, and the arts. |
