Academic Support Services Academic Support Services provides a variety of services in one location to all CSC students. These services include web accessibility, disability support, one-on-one tutoring, and open tutoring in the Math and Writing Lab.
• Disability Support Carl Sandburg College provides services and accommodations to students with varying disabilities in compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Documentation of the specific disability is required in order for the Academic Support Services office to provide accommodations. If you are a student with a disability who requires an accommodation, please contact the Academic Support Services Coordinator at (309) 341-5262, or stop by the Galesburg campus office, Room 130, to schedule an appointment to discuss your individual needs.
• Tutoring All tutoring services are free to Carl Sandburg College students. Students who experience difficulty in a course should seek assistance early in the semester. Tutors are of limited assistance to students late in the semester. To request one-on-one tutoring services, please contact Academic Support Services on the Galesburg campus, Room E130, or call (309) 341-5262 for an appointment. The Math and Writing Lab is an open tutoring environment available to all CSC students on a walk-in basis during posted lab hours. This lab is located in the Student Success Center, Room E137, and is staffed by professional and peer tutors. Study tables and computers are available in this area. One-on-One tutoring is available to assist CSC students who meet at least one of the following criteria:
a. Grade of "D" or lower with instructor recommendation. b. Documented disability or health/medical condition c. GPA below a 2.0
Web Accessibility Carl Sandburg College is continuing in our efforts to make the World Wide Web accessible to all students, faculty, and members of the community, including those with disabilities. For this goal, CSC adheres to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential. W3C is a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective understanding. This standard of accessibility is used by many colleges and universities, including Bradley University and the University of Illinois. 2) Initial Evaluation of Institutional Web Pages (5 pages)
Based on the standards identified, an initial evaluation of the extent to which college web pages meet those standards should be conducted. Colleges may choose one of the following three options as the basis for this initial evaluation of their current institutional web pages.
a) Beginning with the institution's home page, evaluate that page and each institutional page linked from the home page, going only one link deep from the home page;
The College's home page is graded as having normal accessibility standards by the W3C evaluation. The College Web site features alternate tags that are readable by handicap assisted and standard web browsing software. The second layer of the web site, however doesn't not currently meet the W3C standards because it was designed in Team Fusion which has outdated html generation that cannot be adjusted. We are currently in the process of redesigning the web site which is scheduled to be live by the start of the Fall 2006 term. When all pages are migrated over to Collage everything should meet the standards. The Disability Support Office provides services and accommodations to students with varying disabilities. Documentation of the specific disability is required in order for the office to provide accommodations. 3) Develop a Plan for Continuous Improvement and Annual Status Report on Web Accessibility (10 pages)
Each institution should describe a plan for continually improving the accessibility of institutional web pages. The plan should
a) describe how the evaluation of current institutional web pages will be expanded and how accessibility will be improved if necessary, and
b) describe how the institution will ensure accessibility of all future institutional web pages.
CSC strives to update and continue to make our College Web site and technology accessible to our students and faculty with disabilities. A link will be added to the front page of the Web site that will provide information for disability support and accessibility. With the major upgrade of the Website that is in process, we are planning to make all pages in compliance with Illinois Web Accessibility Standards (IWAS).
