FEDERAL PROGRAMS

Federal Pell Grant -  This grant provides funds to students to help pay college expenses.  This money does not have to be repaid.  The awards will vary from $400 to $4,050 per academic year based on financial need and enrollment status.  To apply, students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Institutional Financial Aid Form (IF). Pell funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, or other educational costs.  Eligibility for this grant is based on family income and assets.   If the student does not attend full-time both fall and spring semesters, eligibility will remain for summer enrollment.  Minimum enrollment is one credit hour.

The actual amount of the Pell Grant you are entitled to receive will be determined by the number of credit hours in which you are enrolled at the end of the 100% drop period.  You may not receive aid for courses added after this date, even if the courses you add begin late in the semester.  .

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)FSEOG is a federal grant received by Carl Sandburg College and awarded to students based on need, income, and application date.  Award amounts vary up to $800.  Apply through the FAFSA and IF.  Students must be Pell-eligible to receive FSEOG funds.  FSEOG funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, or other educational costs.   Minimum enrollment is 5.5 credit hour.  Funds are limited.

Federal Work Study (FWS)- This program allows students to work on campus and earn funds to help meet educational costs.  Students can earn up to the amount shown on the award notification.  Students are paid in a bi-weekly paycheck for hours actually worked.  Minimum enrollment is one credit hour per semester.  If you are awarded FWS and wish to apply for a job, you will need to obtain and complete a Work Study Application from the Financial Aid Office and return it to the Employment Resources Office located in Student Services. The Employment Resources Office will refer your application when positions become available in any departments that you specify.  Employment is available on the Galesburg and Carthage campuses.  A job is not guaranteed, and you are not guaranteed to earn your entire award.

STATE PROGRAMS

Monetary Award Program (MAP) –Illinois students may also receive a need-based grant through the state called Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant.  MAP may pay up to full tuition and fees at a community college and is based on financial need, enrollment, and application date.   To apply, submit the FAFSA.  The FAFSA Application must be received before August 15 for first-time applicants and before September 30 for continuing applicants for full-year eligibility.  Funds may be exhausted prior to the specified dates, so students are encouraged to apply early.  The number and amount of MAP grants are limited based on the number of applicants and the funding levels appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly.  MAP funds may not be used to purchase books.  If the student enrolls less than full-time, the award is reduced.  MAP funds are limited to the fall and spring semesters.  Minimum enrollment is three credit hours per semester.

MAP GRANT LIMITATIONS AT SOUTHEASTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE:  In the past, Carl Sandburg College (CSC) students attending Southeastern Community College (SECC) received MAP grant funding the same as students who attended a CSC campus. However, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) has decided these students must be paid according to the Out of State/Foreign Study rules.  Effective with the 2002-03 award year, any student who has received two full-time equivalent semesters of MAP funding will not qualify for additional MAP benefits while attending SECC.    The MAP Grant will be included on the Award Notification for all students without regard to the campus you will attend.   However, the MAP grant will only be applied to tuition charges for students enrolled at SECC when the student has not received two semesters of MAP grant at SECC previously.

Illinois Incentive for Access (IIA) - This program provides grant assistance to Illinois first-year students based on financial need.  The student must qualify for the maximum Pell grant and be enrolled at least half-time (six credit hours).  The grant provides a maximum award of $250 each semester for two semesters.  Funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, or other educational costs.

Illinois National Guard - Tuition and fees are paid for students who have completed one year of service and who are currently enrolled in the National Guard.  The student must be an Illinois resident, have a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and submit a Notification of Eligibility from the National Guard to Carl Sandburg College's Financial Aid Office.  National Guard applications must be renewed yearly.   Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office or on the Web at www.collegezone.com.

Illinois Veterans Grants - This program provides full tuition and fees for students who have served at least one year of active duty in the armed forces.  The student must be a resident of Illinois and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher.  Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office or on the Web at www.collegezone.com.
