Summer Jobs/IL Crop Improvement Association – Galesburg area (4/10/12)
Illinois Crop Improvement Association (IL Crop) was formed in 1922 as the unbiased authority for seed certification and grain quality analysis in the state of Illinois. IL Crop enhances the value of seed and crops through certification, quality assurance and identity preservation programs. In addition, IL Crop provides valuable services to the seed industry by completing assessments of the Insect Resistant Management (IRM) program in the state of Illinois. The following positions are open. If interested, email Matt Raymond for an application, mraymond@ilcrop.com
Crop AssessorThe Assessor position is a seasonal part-time job that lasts through the main months of summer, typically late May through August. Weekly hours vary depending on the number of assessments in an area, distance to travel to visit with farmers and management of your time. The role of the assessor is to visit farmers and collect corn refuge information. Requirements: vehicle/reliable transportation; organizational skills; self-motivation; good communication skills. IL Crop provides training, assessor manual, computer for e-forms and supplies. Benefits—flexible hours, extra money and meet new people. IL Crop pays every 2 weeks (hourly wage), reimbursement for mileage and reimbursement for phone calls to set up appointments. Assessors visit corn growers to determine if fields have been managed according to guidelines required by the US EPA. The main requirement is that farmers that plant corn modified to resist insects also need to plant a portion of their acreage with corn that is susceptible to insects. The susceptible corn, called a refuge, ensures that insects do not become resistant to today’s corn technologies. Assessors call and set up appointments to meet with growers to collect the corn refuge data. After the refuge data is collected it is downloaded online electronically. We supply laptop computers for the data collection process. No grower records are required during the assessment, but records can speed up the assessment process.
Crop InspectorThe time involved varies depending on crop type, number of seed fields in your area and how you manage your time. Typically the inspection season runs, late April through early June for wheat, July through August for corn; and June through early October for soybeans. Typical duties will include driving to seed fields, then walking through the field and taking notes on your purity observations. Purity observations are easy to do and require nothing more than for you to look at the plants as you travel throughout the field. When you are finished with your inspection the observations are recorded on paperwork and sent back to our office. Requirements: vehicle/reliable transportation; organizational skills; self-motivation. IL Crop provides training, inspector manual, informational field guides and supplies. IL Crop pays every 2 weeks (hourly wage) and reimbursement for mileage.
