Program Overview
Carl Sandburg College offers an Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) with a major in the Visual Arts. Students pursuing this degree will take a concentrated course in art, while fulfilling many of their general education requirements. It is intended as a transfer degree for those students who wish to pursue a BFA or MFA in Art. Students with this emphasis may go on to work as studio artists or graphic designers; they may go on to careers in anything from art education to art therapy, computer animation, design and movie makeup.
Students have the opportunity to learn gallery procedures such as exhibit installation and collection work. Students also show their own art while attending Carl Sandburg College at our Annual Juried Student Show. Each spring students submit work to a juried art exhibition; awards are given to the works judged best in each of a number of categories. Sales are encouraged.
We also provide the students with the opportunity to show work around campus and across the community. Students experience art in other ways as well, such as field trips to local and regional gallery and museums and learning from visiting artists.
The Art Department at Carl Sandburg College offers a wide variety of classes of interest to everyone. Maybe you are looking for an interesting elective, or an opportunity to develop new skills; maybe you are interested in a career in the arts. Whatever your interests or experience, there is a place for you in the Art Department.
