GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College will hold an opening reception for artist Brian Haberman’s gallery showing, “Zombies,” from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Building D Lobby on the Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd. Haberman’s works will be on display Sept. 9-Oct. 25 in the Main Lobby Gallery.

MARION, Iowa—The Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team opened its season with a 19th-place finish at the Mount Mercy Fall Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Hunters Ridge Golf Course

 

The Chargers shaved 38 shots off their first-round score by shooting 403 as a team in Saturday’s second round. Sandburg finished the tournament with a total of 844. Every player for the Chargers improved their score by at least two strokes in the second round.

GALESBURG—Jesse Bathelt scored the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute and the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team held on to beat Waubonsee 3-2 on Monday at Kleine Equipment Field.

 

Bathelt’s unassisted goal was his second of the game and helped the Chargers (2-2-0) pick up their second straight victory. Bathelt won a ball at midfield, beat a couple Waubonsee defenders and drove home a shot in the upper corner for his third goal in the last two games....

GALESBURG—Freshman Jake Kirchoff-Sleet scored twice and had an assist as the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team beat Indian Hills (Iowa) 4-0 on Friday evening at Kleine Equipment Field for the Chargers’ first victory of the season.

 

“It’s about time we finally had a complete performance,” Sandburg coach Allen Eskridge said. “We’ve had moments of playing to our potential, but tonight was the first time we put it all together.”

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College men’s and women’s cross country season opener scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Western Illinois Early Bird has been canceled because of extreme heat.
 

The Chargers’ next scheduled event is Bradley Intercollegiate on Sept. 6 at Detweiller Park in Peoria. The women’s race will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s race at 6:15 p.m.

GALESBURG—Despite a pair of second-half goals, the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team lost 3-2 to Knox on Wednesday at Kleine Equipment Field.

BYRON—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team opened its season by taking third in the 12-team PrairieView Preview on Friday at PrairieView Golf Club.

 

The Chargers shot 317 as a team and were led by sophomore Joey Juergens (Galesburg), who posted a 4-over-par 76. GALESBURG—Leah Pence of Illini West High School has signed to play next season with the Carl Sandburg College softball team. Pence, a 5-foot-11 third baseman, helped the Chargers to a 22-8 record last spring during her senior season.
 

Pence joins a Chargers squad that finished 29-23 overall and 12-8 in the Arrowhead Conference in 2013. Sandburg at one point won 16 of 17 games and reached as high as No. 20 in the NJCAA Division II rankings.

GALESBURG—Former Carl Sandburg College men's golfer Cody Reiber won the 2013 Galesburg Men's All-City golf tournament title by shooting a 4-over-par 76 on Sunday at Soangetaha Country Club to claim the championship by four strokes.
