FREEPORT—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team opened Arrowhead Conference play with a 25-18, 26-28, 25-20, 23-25, 15-8 loss at Highland Community College on Wednesday.


The Chargers (1-2, 0-1) lost despite 22 kills, six blocks and a pair of aces from sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey. Sophomore outside hitter Mercedes Sazone added seven kills and two aces for Sandburg.

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team picked up its first victory of the season with a 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21 victory over Monmouth College JV on Tuesday at John Lewis Gymnasium.

DIXON—Nick Gustafson shot a 6-under-par 69 to take medalist honors at the Arrowhead Conference Preview on Friday at Dixon Country Club.


Gustafson’s strong showing helped the Chargers shoot 306 as a team and finish second to Black Hawk Gold, which totaled a 290. It’s the second time in as many tournaments this season Sandburg has had a medalist. Sophomore Cody Reiber took first in the Highland “36” Invitational.

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team lost 3-0 to Scott Community College on Wednesday afternoon at Kleine Equipment Field in the Chargers’ season opener.

FREEPORT—The Carl Sandburg College softball team went 3-1 in the Highland East-West Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Chargers (17-25) lost their opener 9-1 to Waubonsee on Saturday before beating Elgin 8-3 later in the day. Sandburg then beat South Suburban 8-1 and Moraine Valley 13-4 on Sunday.
