Carl Sandburg College PHILOSOPHY CONCERNING ATHLETICS The mission of Carl Sandburg College is comprehensive in scope and the College is committed to the development of each individual to his/her fullest potential. To that end, the College recognizes the many positive benefits a student earns by participating in athletics, including the following:
- Cooperation and camaraderie — teamwork
- Self-discipline and the benefits of hard work on a continuous basis
- Dealing with adversity or success in a healthy manner
- Collective goal setting
- Developing positive attitudes and enhancing self-esteem without sacrificing humility
A participant in an athletic program at CSC is, by definition, a student — a person whose objective is to develop intellectual skills to the maximum extent, a person who will use the educational experience at CSC as a foundation for his/her life-long vocation. It is, therefore, expected that a CSC athlete will make a total personal commitment to academic achievement and will aggressively pursue excellence in the classroom with the same energy and dedication as that demonstrated in the arena of competitive athletics. Pride is the essence of this program. The College faculty and staff, the community, and the families of the athletes rightfully demand and expect behavior and attitudes from the athletic teams that reflect high quality values — we want to be able to tell an athlete that, "We are proud that you represent Carl Sandburg College." Conversely, it is very important that you, the athlete, feel and project pride in wearing the uniform of the Chargers. The College, therefore, has the duty to provide an environment — both academically and physically — which enhances the growth of your human potential to the fullest. We want you to say, "I'm proud to be a Charger and I am pleased to be attending Carl Sandburg College."
