Carl Sandburg College will host an open house for students involved in Upward Bound on Thursday, July 6, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Lonnie Eugene Stewart Art Gallery, Building D on the Main Campus in Galesburg. This public event provides an opportunity to meet Upward Bound students and learn about their experiences in the program.

Upward Bound is a federal program through TRIO designed to help low-income, first-generation high school students excel in secondary and postsecondary education. Carl Sandburg College was awarded the TRIO Upward Bound grant in Fall 1999. Upward Bound serves students who attend Abingdon, Galesburg, Knoxville, and ROWVA high schools. The grant is 100% funded in the amount of $270,375 annually through the U.S. Department of Education.

Upward Bound provides educational, cultural, and social services to program participants throughout the year. Students are provided information and advising in various academic skills, as well as in the areas of postsecondary education and career exploration. During the summer, students are provided instruction in math, lab science, foreign language, and composition and literature. Students have available resources such as laptops, calculators, and stipends, and have the opportunity to participate in various program trips and activities.
