The NEA Big Read in Galesburg will focus on When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka during the month of April 2019. Sandburg’s Corporate & Leisure College is proud to partner with the Galesburg Public Library and offer an educational day trip in celebration of the book. Join us as we travel to Rockford and enjoy a self‐guided tour of Anderson Japanese Gardens. Built in 1978, the Gardens contain12 acres of beautiful landscape featuring waterfalls, lush foliage, and various flower species. Walk through peaceful pathways where you will be inspired by calmness and feel rejuvenated seeing the splendor of spring. May 4th is opening day with live music performances and various vendors. At noon, we will dine at a local Japanese restaurant. (*please note: Based on restaurant group seating availability, we may break into two separate groups). Our next stop is a visit to Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden. First established in 1910, you can take a narrated tour of the Garden aboard the Klehm Express, a covered shuttle with seating for 10‐12. While one group tours Klehm, a second group will be seated inside to participate in a book discussion of When the Emperor was Divine. Book description: "On a sunny day in Berkeley, California, in 1942, a woman sees a sign in a post office window, returns to her home, and matter‐of‐factly begins to pack her family's possessions. Like thousands of other Japanese Americans they have been reclassified, virtually overnight, as enemy aliens and are about to be uprooted from their home and sent to a dusty internment camp in the Utah desert. Told from five points of view, it conveys the emotional texture of their experience: the thin‐walled barracks and barbed‐wire fences, the omnipresent fear and loneliness, the unheralded feats of heroism." Free copies of the book will be available at the Galesburg Public Library. Lunch and shopping expenses are on your own.

Registration required by Wednesday, April 24. No cancellations past 04/24/19; however, a substitute can attend.
