GALESBURG—The 20th-ranked Carl Sandburg College softball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end with a pair of Arrowhead Conference losses to Sauk Valley on Thursday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. Sauk Valley won the first game 3-1 and rallied to beat the Chargers 3-2 in Game 2.
Sandburg (26-18, 12-6) fell out of first place in the conference and had a 10-game league winning streak snapped, but it can still clinch a share of the conference title with a sweep Sunday at Highland in its final Arrowhead doubleheader.
The Skyhawks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of Game 1 and, after the Chargers got on the board thanks to Lindsay Lippert’s RBI single in the sixth, added an insurance run in the seventh. Sandburg opened its seventh with back-to-back singles, but couldn’t push any runs across.
Chargers pitcher Brooke Howard allowed two earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings while taking the loss. She didn’t strike out or walk a batter. Lippert and Howard each had two of Sandburg’s six hits.
Hannah Johnson’s run-scoring single in the fifth gave the Chargers a 2-1 lead in Game 2, but Sauk Valley went ahead on Lori Lynch’s two-run double to the right-field gap in the seventh.
Howard took the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.
The Chargers play their final home game of the regular season when they host Waubonsee in a nonconference doubleheader at 10 a.m. Saturday.
