GALESBURG—Jesse Bathelt scored the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute and the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team held on to beat Waubonsee 3-2 on Monday at Kleine Equipment Field.
Bathelt’s unassisted goal was his second of the game and helped the Chargers (2-2-0) pick up their second straight victory. Bathelt won a ball at midfield, beat a couple Waubonsee defenders and drove home a shot in the upper corner for his third goal in the last two games.
Jalen Jones assisted Bathelt’s first goal, giving Sandburg a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. Jones then finished off a cross from Carlos Viganoni to put the Chargers ahead 2-0 in the 20th minute.
“I was very pleased with our ball movement and work rate and it paid off with an early 2-0 lead,” Chargers coach Allen Eskridge said. “We hung on for the win thanks to some stout defending and a great save from goalkeeper Jake Hannam.”
Waubonsee (3-1-0), which was outshot 17-9, got on the board off a free kick in the 25th minute and added the equalizer in the 32nd minute as the teams went into halftime tied 2-2.
The Chargers’ next game is 7 p.m. Saturday at home against Palmer.
