CHANNAHON—Carl Sandburg College women’s cross country runner Haley Bolliger qualified for the NJCAA Division I cross country meet for the second straight year after finishing second at the Region IV meet Saturday at Community Park.
Bolliger, a sophomore from Tremont, led much of the 5-kilometer race until Monica Page of DuPage overtook her on the final curve and edged Bolliger by one second for the individual title. Bolliger’s time of 19 minutes, 49 seconds was less than :02 shy of breaking the school record she set at last year’s nationals, when she placed 42nd out of 295 runners in 19:47.3.
Bolliger will compete in the national meet at noon Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
DuPage won the women’s team title with 42 points. The Chargers finished fifth with 113 points. Other finishers for Sandburg were Chrissy Kokohn (26th, 22:49), Bayleigh Harrison (33rd, 23:14), Kenzie Payton (35th, 23:15), Marisa Miller (37th, 23:34), Abbie Billeter (40th, 24:37) and Tessa Vowels (44th, 27:09).
Sandburg’s men’s team had three finishers in the top 30 but didn’t qualify any runners for the national meet. Leading the way for the Chargers in the 8K race was Jeff Hilgenberg in 23rd place in 29:16. David Kantor followed 6 seconds later in 24th place, and Rimirez Black came in 28th in 29:44. Other finishers for the Chargers were John Peterson (36th, 30:21), Tyler Schuermann (44th, 31:20), Jake Wolf (48th, 31:53) and William Palmer (57th, 33:19).
DuPage’s 49 points were enough to be Morton by nine for the team championship. Roberto Lara of Lake County was the individual champion.
