CANTON—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team nearly rallied from an early seven-run deficit but fell to Spoon River 10-9 in nonconference action on Thursday.

The Snappers jumped on Chargers starter Adam Staggs (Farmington, Ill./Farmington) to take an 8-1 lead in the first inning. Sandburg (11-12-1) cut its deficit to 8-6 in the fifth on a two-run home run by Ryan Wendt (Red Bud, Ill./Red Bud). After Spoon River added two in its half of the fifth, the Chargers scored three in the sixth to get within a run but couldn’t push across the tying run.

Wendt finished 3 for 5 with a double, home run and five RBIs. Freshman Dean Ballenger (O’Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell Central) had a pair of hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, and freshman Brandon Smith (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) doubled, tripled and scored twice.

The Chargers had eight extra-base hits to the Snappers’ zero, but Sandburg was done in by five errors and nine walks allowed.

The Chargers will travel to face Waubonsee at 1 p.m. today before playing an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at noon Saturday at Black Hawk.
