OGLESBY—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team edged Illinois Valley 25-27, 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 17-15 on Tuesday to pick up its second straight Arrowhead Conference victory.
Sophomore middle hitter Caitlin McVay (Rockridge) led the Chargers (7-8, 2-1) with 21 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Erika Hibberd (Pekin) tallied 14 kills for Sandburg. Sophomore outside hitter Lorren Newingham (Pittsfield) and freshman middle hitter Rachel Barr each added seven kills, and freshman middle hitter Sam Roth (Stark County) had a team-leading eight blocks.
Sophomore setter Lexa Mahr (Macomb) handed out 42 assists in addition to her eight kills and 17 digs. Freshmen Andrea Hendrix (United) and Justine Bodenhamer (Avon) had 29 and 27 digs, respectively, to lead the Chargers defensively, and McVay added 22 digs. Both of Sandburg’s conference road matches this season have gone to overtime in the fifth set.
“I was very proud of the way that we came together as a team tonight to get the win,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said. “I think we are playing the best volleyball we have all season right now. We had to overcome some obstacles, but this was a great team win.”
The Chargers host Black Hawk at 6 p.m. tonight at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in another Arrowhead match.
