GALESBURG—Sophomore Jesse Bathelt netted a hat trick, but the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team was unable to preserve a three-goal halftime lead in a 5-4 loss to Lake County on Friday at Kleine Equipment Field.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Chargers (6-3-0, 2-1-0) and was their first defeat in Region IV Champions Division play this season.
“Sometimes you do just enough to lose and the other team does just enough to win,” Sandburg coach Allen Eskridge said. “Tonight was just one of those nights where we happened to find that formula.”
Bathelt opened the scoring by bending in a corner kick in the ninth minute, and he fed Jake Kirchoff-Sleet in the 17th minute to give the Chargers (6-3-0) a 2-0 lead. Bathelt scored his second goal off a free kick in the 36th minute to put Sandburg ahead 3-0 at halftime.
After the Lancers got on the board in the 48th minute and added another in the 57th minute, Bathelt took a pass from sophomore Chino Ayala, made a beautiful move to get through two defenders and finished off the hat trick — Sandburg’s third in the last four games — for a 4-2 advantage in the 60th minute.
Lake County got the equalizer off a counterattack in the 78th minute and went ahead when Auner Solis put away a rebound off a scramble in front of the net in the 86th minute.
“We played the best we’ve played all season in the first half, but we just didn’t capitalize on enough opportunities to really put the game away,” Eskridge said. “Our effort level and energy was there in there second half, but we just didn’t put away our chances when we had them.”
The Chargers will host Heartland in a nonconference contest at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kleine Equipment Field.
