GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team lost 63-62 in overtime to Highland on Saturday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in an Arrowhead Conference contest.
The Chargers (7-14, 1-6) led 62-58 in overtime before the Cougars (11-10, 4-3) scored the game’s final five points, capped by Marisha Moore’s 3-pointer from the top of the key with 28 seconds left. Sandburg had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but sophomore guard Makenzie Frank (Knoxville) came up short on a 3-point attempt.
“We had our share of opportunities late in the game but just couldn’t close it out,” Sandburg coach Mike Bailey said. “It’s just been that kind of season for us.”
The Chargers trailed 28-15 in the first half but used a 16-3 burst in the final 8:04 to go into the locker room tied at 31-31. A 14-3 spurt gave the Chargers a 52-42 lead with 8:41 left in the second half, but Highland scored 12 of the final 14 points in regulation to force overtime.
Freshman forward Marysa Remick (ROWVA) scored a team-leading 16 points for the Chargers. Frank added 14 points, and freshman forward Lexa Mahr (Macomb) matched her season high with 13 points off the bench.
Sandburg’s next game is 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sauk Valley. The Chargers’ next home game is 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Black Hawk East.
