LA SALLE— The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team opened its spring season with a third-place finish in an Arrowhead Conference meet Tuesday at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club.
Freshman Ryan Ballard (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) led Sandburg with a 6-over-par 78, and freshman Dylan Mullins (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) carded an 83. Freshman Austin McDougall III (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) came in at 84 and freshman Bryer Anderson (Elmwood, Ill./Farmington) rounded out Sandburg’s score with a 94.
The Chargers’ 339 team total left them behind winner Black Hawk (310) and host Illinois Valley (330). Highland won a playoff with Sauk Valley to finish fourth after each came in with a team score of 347.
“We were great in every aspect of the game today except for our putting,” Sandburg coach Ryan Twaddle said. “The greens today were quite quicker than what we have been used to so far this spring. We had too many three-putts to give ourselves a chance to compete. If we can fix our short game, our scores should go down very quickly.”
The next Arrowhead meet will be hosted by Highland at 1:30 p.m. April 17 at Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport. The meet was originally scheduled for April 15.
