CANTON—The Carl Sandburg College softball team allowed just two runs on nine hits in a doubleheader sweep of Spoon River on Friday. The Chargers won the opener 6-0 and took Game 2 4-2.

Sophomore pitcher Brooke Howard (Farmington) tossed a six-hit shutout to lead Sandburg in Game 1. She struck out three and didn’t issue a walk. The Chargers jumped to an early lead, plating three in the first inning and another in the second. Sophomore outfielder Lindsey Lippert (LaSalle-Peru) delivered a two-run double and freshman outfielder Hannah Johnson (Chillicothe Illinois Valley Central) went 3 for 4 with a run driven in to lead an 11-hit Sandburg attack.

Freshman Whitney Freeman (Spoon River Valley) earned the victory in Game 2 after allowing two runs (both unearned) on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Howard recorded the final five outs to pick up the save. The Chargers scored all of their runs in the sixth, with three coming on Johnson’s bases-clearing single.

“Today we stepped up and made things happen on the field,” Chargers coach Todd Winkler said. “We had a big day from our pitching staff and our defense was solid all day. We played as a team for the first time in a few game and that was nice to see.”
