GALESBURG—Political science and history instructor Lara Roemer has been named the 2014 Carl Sandburg College Faculty Member of the Year. Students and fellow faculty members nominated Roemer for her outstanding work in the classroom, and she was introduced as the winner during the 46th annual Carl Sandburg College Commencement on Thursday at Galesburg High School.

By being selected as Sandburg’s Faculty Member of the Year, Roemer will be submitted as the College’s nominee for the Illinois Community College Trustees Association’s Outstanding Faculty Member Award. An instructor at Sandburg since 2011, Roemer earned her bachelor’s in political science from Southern Illinois University and went on to graduate from the University of Illinois Springfield with a master’s in political studies.

“The College has given me a great deal over the last few years that I’ve been here, and the students give back to me on a daily basis. I couldn’t possibly be more humbled and honored to receive such an award,” Roemer said. “When (students) leave my classroom, what I hope they take with them is an interest in the world around them because they’re the future leaders, the people who are going to shape the next 50 years of history. If they can get that one thing out of having class with me, I will be the happiest person ever.”

Prior to coming to Sandburg, Roemer taught at Lincoln College and Illinois Central College. She serves as the adviser for Sandburg’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the College’s Gay-Straight Alliance. Roemer was one of 26 instructors nationwide to be named a Phi Theta Kappa 2014 Faculty Scholar. Known for her innovative and sometimes out-of-the-box teaching style, Roemer this fall will implement a textbook-free course as a way to relieve her students from the burden of purchasing textbooks and as a way to teach them more about the research process.

“Lara Roemer is the definition of what a college faculty member should be. She has an ability to relate with her students that is hard to come by,” one nomination form said. “She takes the time to get to know her students and helps them with their decisions about future classes, colleges and jobs. … Lara Roemer is in a class all her own, and Carl Sandburg College is a better place with her in it.”
