BYRON—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team is in fourth place after Thursday’s opening round of the Region IV tournament at PrairieView Golf Club. The Chargers shot 323 as a team and are three shots behind Lake County for second place.
The top two teams in the tournament qualify for the NJCAA Division II tournament, which will take place in May. Sandburg is in search of its second straight trip to nationals and fourth in the last five years.
Freshman Austin McDougall III (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) shot a 4-over-par 76 to pace the Chargers during the first round and is tied for fifth individually. Freshman Ryan Ballard (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) came in at 7 over and is tied for 12th. Sophomore Joey Juergens (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) and freshman Dylan Mullins (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) each shot 84 to round out Sandburg’s scoring. Sophomore Patrick Lewis (Williamsfield, Ill./Williamsfield) carded an 88 that didn’t count toward the Chargers’ team score.
Defending Region IV champion Black Hawk shot 303 and has a commanding 17-shot lead. Sandburg is in a six-team pack separated by seven shots for second place. Lake County (320) is in second, followed by Prairie State (322), Sandburg (323), Illinois Valley (324), Elgin (324) and Moraine Valley (327)
“We kept ourselves in striking distance of second place, so we’re in a pretty good spot right now,” Sandburg coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We knew coming in that it was probably going to be a scramble for that second spot for nationals. We have only one returning player from last year’s team, so I was really happy with the way our new guys came out in the biggest tournament of the year so far.”
The three-day tournament continues with the second round at 10 a.m. Friday.
