GALESBURG—Students in the Carl Sandburg College cosmetology program won three awards at the 27th annual Illinois Association of Cosmetology Schools Student Competition on Nov. 11 in Tinley Park.
Sandburg’s Kendra Wiechmann and Kelly Mead took second place in Color to the Extreme, an avant-garde category that required students to take a specific color theme to an extreme level and incorporate it throughout their model’s clothing, nails, makeup, accessories and hairpieces. Courtney Duckwiler finished third in Fantasy/Flat Nail Art, in which students had one hour to create a free-hand design and display it as flat, wearable nail art. Competitors in the category were judged on design, creativity, execution and degree of difficulty. Kayli Zwicker was awarded seventh place in the ’80s Retro category, which required students to create a hair and makeup design using styles from the 1980s.
Sandburg placed in three of six categories while competing against 150 students from 20 other schools.
“We competed against a lot of very large institutions, so I’m very pleased with how we did as a group,” said Barb Kirchgessner, coordinator and instructor of cosmetology. “I’m very proud of the students who won awards, and even the students who didn’t place had amazing presentations. Everyone put in a lot of effort to do a great job.”
