PLYMOUTH, Ind.—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team remained in 17th place but trimmed its deficit behind Independence (Kan.) to just three shots after the third round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament Thursday at Swan Lake Resort.
The Chargers trailed Independence by 15 shots entering the round but ended the day three shots behind the Pirates after shooting 336 as a team. Sandburg’s three-round total of 997 is nine shots ahead of College of Southern Maryland.
“It was good to see us make a little bit of a move today, but it would’ve been nice to shoot even better than we did,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We closed the gap a little bit, but some of that was because other teams around us struggled as well.”
Freshman Dylan Mullins (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) shot an 11-over-par 83 to be Sandburg’s third different leading scorer in as many days. Sophomore Joey Juergens (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) and freshman Austin McDougall III (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) each came in at 84, and freshman Ryan Ballard (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) carded an 85. Freshman Bryer Anderson (Farmington, Ill./Farmington) added a 92 that didn’t count toward the Chargers’ team total.
“There were a lot of tough pin placements, and we had a lot of putts that lipped out today,” Twaddle said. “It was tough for everyone to put up a good score today, so it was good to see our guys grind it out even when they weren’t playing their best. Hopefully we can put it all together tomorrow.”
Walters (Tenn.) State shot even as a team to extend its lead to 16 shots over Mesa (Ariz.) for first place in the team standings. Tanner McKinney of Mineral Area (Mo.) is 2 under for the tournament and leads Charlie Cameron of Tyler (Texas), who shot 5 under on Thursday, by two strokes in the individual standings.
The four-day tournament concludes with the final round Friday.
