MONMOUTH—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team opened its spring season with a fifth-place finish at the Fighting Scots Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Gibson Woods Golf Course.
The Chargers shot 307 and were in fifth place after Friday’s opening round and remained there after shooting 312 on Saturday for a 619 total in the nine-team tournament. Illinois Wesleyan won the event after totaling a 5-over-par 573.
Freshman Joey Juergens led the Chargers by shooting a 9-over 151 for the two rounds to finish tied for 13th. Sophomore Nick Gustafson (156) tied for 22nd, followed by sophomore Chad Hatch (157) in 25th, sophomore Cody Reiber (159) in a tie for 27th and sophomore Mark Dockstader (165) in 39th.
“I was glad to see the guys keep their focus and persevere on a tough day,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We need some nice weather soon, so we can get a lot of practice in and be at the level of play that we all expect.”
Sandburg begins the Arrowhead Conference season at 1:30 p.m. April 11 with a conference match hosted by Illinois Valley at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club.
