GALESBURG—An impressive shooting night from long range powered the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team to a 100-66 Arrowhead Conference victory over Illinois Valley on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
The Chargers (14-10, 4-4) picked up their second straight victory on the strength of a 14-for-28 effort from 3-point range. Freshman guard Vince Gooden (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) led the way with a game-high 25 points, highlighted by 6-of-12 shooting from beyond arc.
Sophomore forward Aaron Powers (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) added 22 points, and sophomore forward Jeremy Brown (Chillicothe, Ill./Illinois Valley Central) scored 20 off the bench. Sandburg drained nine 3s in the first half to lead 53-34 at the break.
“We shot the ball well, but I really liked the way we moved the ball tonight,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We had good passing, but we also made the extra pass a lot, which led to some really quality shots.”
Drake O’Donnell and Torrance Johnson each scored 12 to lead the Eagles. Ross Arteaga and Mike McCray also had 10 apiece for IVCC.
The Chargers will look to push their winning streak to three games when they play at Black Hawk at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
