Sandburg President Receives Knox College Alumni Achievement Award

Feb. 27, 2013
GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College President Dr. Lori L. Sundberg recently was presented the Knox College Alumni Achievement Award. Sundberg was one of four recipients of the award during a ceremony Feb. 15 in Knox’s Seymour Library.
“It was an amazing ceremony and I'm very humbled to have been selected,” Sundberg said. “I feel very blessed to have had the outstanding educational opportunities that I've had from Carl Sandburg College to Knox College and beyond.”

Sundberg earned a cosmetology certificate from Sandburg in 1977 and went on to start her own business in Galesburg. She returned to the College in 1991 to complete her general education studies before enrolling in 1993 at Knox, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and history in 1995.

Sundberg earned her master’s from Western Illinois University in 1998 and a doctorate of business administration from St. Ambrose University in 2003. After working at Sandburg as an instructor, coordinator of institutional research and several administrative positions — including vice president of academic services — Sundberg was named the College’s sixth president in 2010. She is the first female president in Sandburg’s history.

“Much of Lori's work,” Knox President Teresa Amott said before presenting the award to Sundberg, “has been inspired by a deep love of the Galesburg community, higher education and the understanding that many roads lead students to pursue higher learning.”

Sundberg was nominated in January for consideration for the American Association of Community Colleges Board of Directors, and she serves as a member of the AACC’s 21st Century Initiative Implementation Team. Sundberg also is a peer reviewer with the North Central Association of the Higher Learning Commission and the co-chair of the Student Development Committee for the Illinois Community College Council of Presidents.
