GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College softball team went 3-1 during a pair of nonconference doubleheaders Friday and Saturday. The Chargers split two games at Augustana JV on Friday before sweeping Waubonsee on Saturday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
Sandburg was shut out on four hits in an 8-0 loss in the opener at Augustana JV. The Chargers then used a five-run fifth to break a tie in Game 2 and went on to win 7-1.
Sandburg scored all of its runs in the fifth with two outs. Knotted at 1-1, Shannon Kasap delivered the go-ahead run with an RBI single to right. Lindsay Lippert followed with a two-run double, and Kaylee Moseley added a two-run single to make it 6-1. Lorren Newingham knocked in an insurance run in the sixth with a solo homer.
Whitney Freeman got the win in the circle after surrendering just one run on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. She struck out three and didn’t issue a walk. Newingham came on to record the game’s final out.
Brooke Howard threw a five-hit shutout in the Chargers’ 3-0 win Saturday over Waubonsee. The sophomore didn’t strike out or walk a batter, and the Sandburg defense played error-free ball behind her.
Corrine Heins’ two-run double in the fourth proved to be the game-winner, and Moseley had three hits in three at-bats. The Chargers took the second game 9-8 in eight innings.
