FREEPORT—The Carl Sandburg College softball team went 3-1 in the Highland East-West Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Chargers (17-25) lost their opener 9-1 to Waubonsee on Saturday before beating Elgin 8-3 later in the day. Sandburg then beat South Suburban 8-1 and Moraine Valley 13-4 on Sunday.
Lindsay Lippert drove in the only run against Waubonsee for the Chargers, who picked up just three hits in the contest, but they jumped to a 6-0 lead after five innings against Elgin.
Shannon Kasap went 2 for 2, including a triple, and had two RBIs for Sandburg. McKown and shortstop Megan Blumenshein also drove in a run apiece for the Chargers. McKown also allowed one hit and struck out four in four shutout innings to pick up the victory in the circle.
Sandburg grabbed a 7-0 lead after its half of the fifth against South Suburban. Lippert doubled and drove in a pair of runs, and sophomore second baseman Dana Combs had a pair of hits, including a double. Freshman Megan Baker allowed one run on four hits in earning the complete-game victory. She struck out two and walked two.
The Chargers pounded out 18 hits in their victory over Moraine Valley. Sandburg took the lead with a pair of runs in the third and added five in the fourth. Freshman Brooke Howard got the complete-game victory after allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking one.
Sandburg travels to Illinois Valley at 3 p.m. Tuesday for an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader.
