GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College Upward Bound summer program will have an open house from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. July 9 in the Building D lobby on the Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd, to showcase work students have done in their classes.

Projects include iPad videos (foreign language); reports on the novel “The Maze Runner” (literature); a full-sized medieval trebuchet and Lego robots (science); and rockets and geometrical kites (math).

Upward Bound summer interns will also be on hand at the open house to share their internship experiences through the Knox County YMCA Kid Care Station, Knox County YMCA Summer Day Camp, Carl Sandburg College Business Office, Carl Sandburg College IT Department, Galesburg Animal Hospital and the Orpheum Theatre.

The main goal of the summer program is to keep students academically sharp over the summer and prepare them for the upcoming school year. The 30 students in the program also have taken college visits to Knox College, Iowa Wesleyan College and the University of Illinois Springfield. The program will conclude with a trip July 10-12 to St. Louis that will include college visits to Webster University and Washington University.

The Sandburg Upward Bound program is a federally funded program under the U.S. Department of Education that provides educational, social and cultural services to select Knox County students. The goals of Upward Bound are to assist students in achieving academic success while in high school, develop well-rounded citizens and assist students with their transition into post-secondary education, with the goal of obtaining a four-year degree.

Upward Bound participants must be Knox County students in the Abingdon-Avon, Galesburg, Knoxville or ROWVA school districts and meet program eligibility criteria. Students must be first-generation college-bound students and/or meet income guidelines. There is no cost to participate in Upward Bound.
