PALOS HILLS—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team saw its season end with a 25-21, 25-13, 19-25, 25-12 loss at Moraine Valley on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Region IV tournament.
Sophomore middle hitter Caitlin McVay (Rockridge) and sophomore setter Lexa Mahr (Macomb) each posted double-doubles in their final match for the Chargers (21-18). McVay notched team highs of 16 kills and 15 digs, and Mahr had seven kills and 10 digs while handing out a team-best 29 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Lorren Newingham (Pekin) had seven kills as well as four blocks.
Moraine Valley, which swept the Chargers in August at the South Suburban Invite, advances to Saturday’s Region IV Final Four on Saturday at Lake County.
The match ended the Sandburg careers for sophomores McVay, Mahr, Newingham, Ashlynn Winkler (United), Sadie Van Norman (United) and Erika Hibberd (Pekin).
“We just ran into a better team tonight,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said. “It’s always tough to have your season end short of where you hoped, but I think we had a pretty good year. We have a strong group of sophomores who had great careers for us, and we’re really going to miss them.”
