PALOS HILLS—Waubonsee rallied in the final minutes to beat the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team 67-62 on Sunday in the semifinals of the Region IV tournament and end the Chargers’ season.
Third-seeded Sandburg (13-14) led 36-35 at halftime and by as much as six on a pair of occasions in the second half. Tied at 59, Bailey Klaas hit the go-ahead 3-pointer for the second-seeded Chiefs with 1:45 left to play.
Trailing 63-59 with about a minute left, sophomore guard Kaylee Moseley (Taylor Ridge, Ill./Rockridge), who had a team-high 20 points for the Chargers, hit a 3 to cut Sandburg’s deficit to one. Sandburg had a chance to tie in the closing seconds down 65-62, but Moseley misfired on a 3-point attempt and Waubonsee hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Sophomore forward Marysa Remick (Victoria, Ill./ROWVA) added 14 points for the Chargers, who were denied their first Region IV tournament final appearance since 2008.
Waubonsee advances to face Kishwaukee on Saturday in the championship game.
“I told our team before the tournament that if we played the way I know they’re capable of playing, we could go out and win the whole thing, and that’s what we did tonight,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “We played a great game, but we just didn’t have some shots at the end go our way.”
