Haven't you a father? Sons without fathers in Heminway's Fiction Warren County Public Library, Monmouth, IL The pregnant Catherine Barkley asks Frederick Henry this question near the end of Book II in "A Farewell to Arms". Biographies of Hemingway have noticed that the author's ambivalence about his own father (who committed suicide while Hemingway was finishing the novel)had already surfaced in several early stories that predate the major novels. In "The Sun Also Rises", "A Farewell to Arms", and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", on the other hand, fathers are conspicuously absent from the field of vision. In this context, Monmouth College Professor Craig Watson will argue that the question "Haven't you a father" may be a key to understanding what is at first personal, but subsequently both American and modern about Hemingway's fictive struggle to define meaning and find value in a world where the answer to the question is, "No."
