Federal Pell Grant

 

**Award Range:**  $299-$2,908/semester

 

Pell Grant is a federal program for undergraduate students who have not yet earned their first bachelor’s degree. The data you provide on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) produces an EFC, or Expected Family Contribution, which is used in determining your Pell Grant eligibility.  

 

Federal Pell Grant Eligibility is limited to 6 years at full- time enrollment. Once a student has reached the Lifetime Eligibility Used the student may qualify for other types of financial aid but will no longer be eligible for Pell Grant.

 

The amount of Federal Pell Grant funding you are awarded and/or eventually entitled to receive is based not only on your EFC, but also on such factors as your enrollment level, and the number of semesters you attend. Students may not receive Federal Pell Grant funds from more than one school simultaneously (e.g. – award period or semester). You may receive a Federal Pell Grant, in some cases, even if you are attending less than half-time. Financial aid is awarded based on anticipated full-time enrollment. Pell Grant is adjusted through the 9th calendar days for 9 to 16 week classes. Once that date is reached, Pell will not change for courses dropped as long as the student started the course.  Pell will not be increased for courses added after the adjusted date.  Students are paid up front for courses that begin throughout the term.  Pell awards are adjusted and money must be repaid if a student fails to attend a course that begins after the adjustment date.

Refund period refers to the number of calendar days beginning with the first day of the term.

If a student enrolls less than full-time, their Pell Grant award will be adjusted (decreased) based on their actual enrollment.

Some of the other policies which pertain to the Federal Pell Grant include:

  • A student must maintain enrollment and attendance during the semester in order to maintain eligibility for Federal Pell Grant funds. Dropping classes (or simply not attending class anymore) before the Financial Aid Census Date usually results in the student owing back the Pell Grant funds associated with that class.
  • If your FAFSA is received by Sandburg after the close of a semester you have already attended, as part of the current award year, your retroactive reimbursement is calculated based on the number of credit hours successfully completed with an earned grade of “A, B, C, D, or P”. In addition, if you have been selected for verification, all required documents must be on file and you must meet all other eligibility criteria to receive a retroactive award. The last possible day for your valid FAFSA information to be received for the year is the last day of the Spring/Summer term, or your last date of attendance for the award year, whichever is earlier.
  • Students may only receive one scheduled Pell Grant award per award year (for 2015-2016, the maximum award for a student with an EFC of 0000 is $5775). If you are enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) during both the Fall and Spring semesters, you will NOT be eligible to receive Pell Grant funding for your enrollment during Summer. If you are enrolled less than full-time during either the Fall or Spring semesters, you may have remaining Pell Grant eligibility for Summer, however, the remaining eligibility may be for an amount less than a normal full-time award.
  • The Federal Government can change (reduce) the funding for this program at any time.

 

 

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

 

**Award Range:**  Maximum of $2000/semester

 

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is available for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need as demonstrated by the lowest EFC. Priority consideration is given to students who receive the Federal Pell Grant. The grant provides up to a maximum of $4000 per year. Qualifying students apply for this need-based aid by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Funding levels for this program are very limited. As a result, fewer than 10% of all Pell Grant eligible students will be awarded SEOG. Interested students should apply early to ensure maximum award consideration.  

 

State of IL Monetary Award Program Grant (MAP)

 

MAP Grant is available for undergraduate students who have not yet earned their first bachelor’s degree. The data you provide on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is shared with the state who calculates the student award. The amount of MAP Grant funding you are awarded and/or eventually entitled to receive is based not only on your award, but also on such factors as application date, your enrollment level, and the number of semesters you attend during the award year. Students may not receive IL MAP Grant funds from more than one school simultaneously. 

 

Due to the ongoing uncertainty of State funding, IL MAP Grants will be applied to student accounts once payment is received by the State.  

 

State of Illinois Monetary Award Grant Disclosures:

By applying for financial aid and agreeing to share that information with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) you have been considered for the State of Illinois (IL) Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant. If you were determined to meet the eligibility criteria for the MAP grant, an award is included on this award letter. This award may be an estimate made by the financial aid office and, if so, is identified as a "State of IL MAP Grant (Est)". MAP grants are limited based on the number of applicants and funding levels appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly. Please be aware that in light of state funding constraints, reductions to estimated or actual MAP grants are possible. Eligibility for a MAP grant is tracked by the equivalent number of semester credit hours of MAP benefits paid on your behalf. This is called MAP Paid Credit Hours. Payment for each term is being made according to the equivalent number of credit hours eligible for MAP payment, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 15 MAP Paid Credit Hours. There is a limit on the number of MAP Paid Credit Hours that can be paid while you are classified by your school as a freshman and sophomore. This limit is the equivalent of 75 MAP Paid Credit Hours. If this maximum is reached, you must attain junior status for your MAP grant eligibility to resume. The maximum number of MAP Paid Credit Hours that can be received is capped at 135. If a State of IL MAP Grant (Est) is not included in your award letter, you are not eligible for the grant at Sandburg.

 

You may find the number of MAP paid credit hours you have used by calling 800.899.4722.  Students at a community college cannot be classified as a Junior or Senior. 

 

You must be enrolled for at least 15 credit hours in a semester to receive the full amount of the MAP Grant shown on your award letter.   If you are enrolled less than 15 credits the award is prorated as follows:  Award ÷ 15 x credits enrolled.   This award may only be applied to tuition and the registration fee.

Map Update 2015-16

 

Due to the lack of an approved state budget, there have been no funds allocated for the Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP Grant) for the 2015-2016 award year. Therefore, Carl Sandburg College regrets to announce that no MAP Grant funding can be applied to students’ accounts for the spring semester.   Federal Pell funds are not impacted and often Pell is sufficient to pay tuition, fees and book costs. 

 

Q: Will I receive MAP Grant funding for the spring 2016 semester?

A: Even if you received the MAP Grant in the fall term, Carl Sandburg College will not be able to credit MAP Grant funds to your spring semester tuition and fee bill because there is currently no approved state budget.  The college will apply MAP Grants to student accounts if state funding is allocated. 

 

Q: If I’m not receiving MAP Grant funds, why do I see a MAP award on my financial aid account?

A: You see this because initial calculations show you are eligible to receive MAP Grant.  Once the budget is approved and we know if there will be any changes to awards, your MAP funds, will be applied to your student account. Please be aware that given the funding issues even if a state budget is approved, a reduction to your original MAP Grant awarded amount is possible.

 

Q: Will the lack of MAP Grant funding affect the funding I receive through my Pell Grant?

A: Yes, if you receive a federal Pell Grant, that money will be applied toward any spring tuition and fees that your MAP Grant would have otherwise covered. This may result in a lower Pell Grant refund than you received in the fall term.

 

Q: What if the state allocates and distributes MAP Grant funds?

A: If a state budget is passed and MAP Grant funding is determined, Carl Sandburg College will apply the appropriate award to your tuition and fee bill and refund any resulting credit balances.

 

Q: When will the state allocate and distribute MAP Grant funds?

A: We hope that a state budget is approved soon so that we can better assist all of our MAP Grant recipients. However, at this time, we are not able to estimate when that might occur as this is a state process, not an institutional one.

 

Q: The College credited half of the MAP Grant in the fall with no state budget. Why is this semester different?

A: In anticipation of an approved state budget, Carl Sandburg College applied half of the MAP Grant to your student tuition and fee bill for the fall term using College funds.  Because there is still no budget and the state is not paying any of its obligations to the College, Carl Sandburg cannot continue to use College funds to apply spring MAP awards.

 

Q: If no state budget is passed, will I owe the college money that would have otherwise been covered by the MAP Grant from the fall semester?

A: No, the MAP award previously applied to your account for fall semester will remain regardless of the state budget impasse.

 

Q: With no MAP Grant funding, I can’t afford to continue my education. Are there any other options?

A: We understand that the uncertainty of MAP Grant funding may impact your plan to cover the costs of spring semester at Carl Sandburg College. Q: If the state allocates MAP Grant funding, how will I know?

A: Once a budget is in place, and MAP funds are allocated, we will notify you when your award is applied to your student account.

 

Q:  How will I know the impact this will have on my account? 

A:  You may view your student account following registration for spring semester through mySandburg.  The balance due will reflect your eligibility excluding MAP awards.  A negative balance would be the amount available to the student for books or refunded after attendance is confirmed.
