Jamie Ryan already had a cosmetology degree from Carl Sandburg College under her belt but after working as a teacher’s aide, Ryan realized she had a passion for teaching that she wanted to explore.

With three kids, Ryan has a busy schedule but was able to take advantage of using the time when her kids were in school during the day to take classes at CSC. Ryan is on track to graduate with an Associate in Arts in Teaching degree and hopes to transfer to Western Illinois to pursue a degree in their education program.

She knew she would need some help transitioning back into school and feels that CSC provided her that support.

“I’ve really been enjoying going to my instructors for help. I was new jumping back into it at 34 and I needed to brush up on a lot of things, so that has been a positive experience,” says Ryan.

Ryan also enjoys the different perspective she gains as an adult learner in classes that are predominantly students who are 18 to 20 years old.

“It’s fun to feel young again and I’m outgoing as far as meeting people. I chuckle sometimes because things have changed but a lot of things are still the same,” said Ryan.

Ryan advises those who are thinking about returning to school to jump in head first.

“It’s worth it, it really is. Everyone was really helpful in answering my questions. Right now is the right time for me but you won’t know until you talk to someone about it if it’s the right time for you,” said Ryan.
