Tucker Blum (Elmwood, Ill./Elmwood) and three relievers combined for a two-hitter as the Carl Sandburg College baseball team edged Spoon River 2-1 on Wednesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

Blum, a sophomore right-hander, allowed a pair of singles over six shutout innings to earn the victory, and Cody Marquith (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville), Travis Ausbury (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) and Austin Fancher (Moline, Ill./Moline) each tossed a frame in relief as the Chargers (10-5) won for the ninth time in their last 10 games.

Blum issued six walks but also struck out six in earning the victory. In total, Sandburg pitchers handed out 10 bases on balls but stranded 11 Spoon River runners.

Sandburg broke through in the fourth on Mitchell Ellison’s (East Moline, Ill./United Township) sacrifice fly after Shane Coleman (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) tripled to lead off the inning. Coleman also scored the Chargers’ other run after drawing a one-out walk in the sixth. He moved up on a balk, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Jordan Chandler (Erie, Ill./Erie)

The Snappers scored in the eighth against Ausbury without the benefit of a hit, but he escaped further trouble by fanning back-to-back batters with runners at second and third. Fancher worked around a pair of hit batsmen with two out in the ninth to earn his second save.

Coleman finished 2 for 3 for Sandburg, while Marty Mennenga (Rantoul, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda) also had a pair of hits.

The Chargers’ next contest is a home doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday against Rock Valley.
