Illini West High School boasted the winning team in a business simulation competition hosted by Carl Sandburg College on March 16. Ten teams from five high schools (two each from Illini West, United, Rushville-Industry, Williamsfield and Galesburg) took part in making management, marketing and operations decisions for their simulated café over eight fast-paced and competitive rounds.

Teams made key choices about the business such as number of employees, wages, product prices, other materials to purchase, hours of operation, advertising and prices to charge while using accounting reports to guide their decisions. Each team also was tasked with creating a name and designing a logo for their business. The goal for each team was to form the most profitable and efficient business operation.

Teams included three students, a teacher from the school and a Sandburg student mentor. Illini West’s winning team, Deja Brew, included Chase Grainger, Lucas Cole, Austin Torrence, teacher Susan Holtsclaw and mentor James Hampton. Runner-up Whole Latte Love of United consisted of Ian Allaman, Kal Youngquist, Toby Whitsitt, teacher Joel Zink and Sandburg mentor Kaleb Drew.

Other awards were given for: Best Prepared (Black Sheep No Sugar, United), Best Team Name (Livin’ La Vida Mocha, Rushville-Industry), Best Team Logo (Jacked Up!, Galesburg), Best Ambience (Billtown Beans, Williamsfield) and Best Satisfaction (The Dream Bean, Illini West).
