The Carl Sandburg College baseball team grabbed an early lead, but Illinois Central came back to hand the Chargers a 15-4 loss in seven innings Thursday afternoon at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

Sandburg (20-15) jumped to a 4-1 lead after two innings behind a Mitchell Ellison (East Moline, Ill./United Township) RBI single in the first, a Nolan Ard (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) run-scoring double in the second and a two-run home run from Jordan Chandler (Erie, Ill./Erie) two batters later.

The Cougars, though, did all the scoring after that, plating four in the fourth, six in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Chandler’s homer was his sixth of the season, putting him one behind Levi Brening (Coon Rapids, Minn./DuQuoin) for the team lead. Chandler and Brening each had two of Sandburg’s eight hits on the day.

Brett Cagle (Fisher, Ill./Fisher) didn’t allow a hit in recording the final four outs in relief for the Chargers.

The Chargers will jump back into Arrowhead Conference play with a home doubleheader at noon Saturday against Sauk Valley.
