The Carl Sandburg College softball team picked up a pair of Arrowhead Conference victories during a busy weekend in which the Chargers played doubleheaders on four straight days.
Sandburg dropped a pair of contests to Spoon River (18-5 and 11-0) on Thursday, split a league twinbill at Illinois Valley on Friday, lost games to Morton (8-7) and DuPage (5-2) on Saturday at the Highland East/West Tournament and split a pair of conference games at Highland on Sunday.
The Chargers (4-18, 2-4) rallied for a 5-3 victory with a three-run seventh at IVCC after losing the opener 13-5. Sandburg’s comeback happened with all three runs scoring with two outs.
Chloe Sullivan (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) tied it with a double to center that scored Lexi Strange (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) from second. Sullivan scored the go-ahead run when Abbey French’s (Alexis, Ill./United) drive to right was misplayed by the Eagles’ right fielder. Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) singled to right to drive in French with an insurance run.
Kelsie French (Camanche, Iowa/Camanche) worked around a one-out error to pick up the complete-game victory. She allowed three runs on five hits.
After dropping Sunday’s opener at Highland 9-6, the Chargers held on for a 9-8 win in Game 2. Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin), Chelsea Lesniewski (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) Sullivan and Abbey French each had a pair of hits in the nightcap. Sullivan and Vetter each drove in two for Sandburg, which led 9-5 after five innings.
The Chargers plated six two-out runs in the fourth, with Vetter delivering the biggest hit on a two-run single to right for a 6-4 lead.
Sandburg is in action again at 3 p.m. Monday when it hosts John Wood at the Wiliam “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
