Galesburg, IL

Carl Sandburg College Theater presents its spring play, “If,” from April 20-22 in the Fine Arts Theatre, Room F118, on the Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd.

This original play is the fifth written by director Susan Sharp, assistant professor of theater at Sandburg, and the fourth of those to be staged at the College. Show times are 7 p.m. April 20-22 in addition to a matinee at 2 p.m. April 22. Opening night includes a post-show reception and discussion with Erin Clark-Benedict from Lutheran Social Services.

When reporter Nevin O’Neal (Zach Hunter, Monmouth) is approached with a story idea by his editor, Eric (Nick Thomas, Williamsfield), he starts on a journey to find his birth parents and finds a surprising family history, himself and true love with Maureen (Kaylyn Schafer, Altona).

Complicating the story is Nevin’s girlfriend (Rachel Leath, Galesburg), an antagonistic public official (Ryan Rutledge, Knoxville) and Junior (Dayton Whiting, Williamsfield), a file clerk at the record’s office who’s not that bright. Friends Sarie (Courtney Howard, Farmington) and Lena (Jaynee Bowker, Williamsfield) are like Nevin’s sisters and guide him in his decisions.

“I’ve written a story that shows a dramatic and difficult side of adoption and trying to find birth parents,” Sharp said, “but our discussion on opening night will talk about adoption from the other side, rounding out the story and attempting to answer questions.”

Tickets will be available at the door one hour prior to each performance. Tickets are $8 for adults; $4 for senior citizens and veterans; $2 for non-Sandburg students; and free to Sandburg students, faculty and staff with a College ID. This show includes strong language; patrons under 12 will not be admitted.
