Carl Sandburg College instructor James Hutchings recently received the John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College.

Hutchings, coordinator of music and study abroad at Sandburg, was presented with the award, which celebrates outstanding contributions to teaching, leadership and learning by community college faculty and staff. This marks the fourth consecutive year the College has had someone receive the honor.

“Watching students discover the world around them is one of the greatest rewards of my career,” Hutchings said. “When I am able to help them make connections between their experiences and those of others in a time, place and life different than theirs, their lives become something more than they were before. I’m grateful every day to be a part of those connections and the larger lives students can live as a result.”

The League for Innovation in the Community College is a consortium of more than 750 community colleges and universities worldwide that is dedicated to catalyzing the community college movement. Founded in 1968, the League hosts conferences and institutes; develops web resources; conducts research; produces publications; provides services; and leads projects and initiatives with member colleges, corporate partners and other agencies to make a difference for students and communities.
