Madison, Wis.

Madison (Wis.) kept the Carl Sandburg College baseball team’s bats quiet Saturday as it swept the Chargers in the Region IV sectional. The Wolfpack took the first two games of the best-of-three series, winning 4-1 in the opener and 5-1 in Game 2 to end the Chargers’ season.

Sandburg, the fifth seed in the tournament, collected just seven hits on the afternoon. The Chargers scratched out just two hits in Game 1, singles from Marty Mennenga (Rantoul, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda) and Shane Coleman (Abingdon, Ill./Abindgon-Avon).

The fourth-seeded Wolfpack got single runs in the first, third, sixth and seventh against Chargers starter Matt Trouten (Moline, Ill./Moline), who allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out six in seven innings.

Sandburg’s only run in Game 1 came when Tyson Nylin (Keithsburg, Ill./Mercer County) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, cutting the Chargers’ deficit to 2-1.

The teams each had five hits in Game 2, but the Chargers struck out 20 times, with 18 of those coming in Wolfpack starter Sam Mund’s eight innings of work.

Madison (33-16) opened the scoring with a three-run top of the fourth. It stayed that way until the Wolfpack tacked on two more runs in the ninth. Sandburg’s lone run came in the bottom of the ninth as Mitch Ellison (East Moline, Ill./United Township) crossed the plate on a one-out wild pitch.
