Carl Sandburg College is offering a pair of career academies in criminal justice and nursing this summer for area youth. These hands-on programs for students who have completed grades 5-9 are designed to give them the opportunity to challenge themselves and explore career options in an environment free from the pressure of homework or grades.

The Criminal Justice Career Academy will take place from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. July 24-28 on the College’s Main Campus in Galesburg. Lessons and activities include fingerprint identification and the booking process; fingerprint dusting and lifting; crime scene casting and impression techniques; cyber security; and sketching and processing a basic crime scene. Guest speakers within the occupation also will share their experiences. In addition to learning basic forensic techniques, participants will learn to connect the roles of fire/EMS personnel with the roles of law enforcement, and they’ll explore career options in the criminal justice and cyber security fields.

The Nursing Career Academy will take place from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. July 31-Aug. 4 on the Main Campus. Lessons and activities include learning how to take vital signs, hands-on time in the College’s nursing lab and occupational and student speakers to discuss their experiences in the field. Participants also will learn about career options in the nursing field and how they can become a nurse.
