The Carl Sandburg College Community Garden has been awarded $1,000 through Hy-Vee’s One Step Community Garden Grant program.

Grants are awarded to organizations whose core focus teaches those in need about health and nutrition through the process of planting, tending and harvesting their own fruits and vegetables. Grants can be used for program materials such as seeds, plants and supplies or general operating support for garden upgrades.

Started in 2011 and run entirely by volunteers, the Sandburg Community Garden annually provides thousands of pounds of fresh produce that is donated to local food pantries and families in need. Last year, the garden produced 3,972 pounds of food behind a combined 743 hours of volunteer work. Like the garden’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SandburgCommunityGarden.

For more information about the garden or to inquire about becoming a volunteer, contact Mary Robson at 309.368.3681 or mrobson@sandburg.edu.
